A small community builds strong character.

Early in Colorado history the vision of gold in the mountains was in the eyes of many.  It was estimated in the spring of 1859 about 100,000 people swarmed to the Rocky Mountains making it the “great stampede”.

However, on the Colorado plains there was what is referred to as “white gold”, sugar beets.  There are only a few places in the world perfectly suited for sugar beet horticulture and by 1920 Sugar was Colorado’s mainstay.

The only Sugar beet factory left in Colorado is located in Fort Morgan, built in 1906.  The building of the Sugar Factory was one of the major events that shaped and continues to shape Morgan County.

When the first travelers laid eyes on the horizon of what is now Morgan County they did not see any potential.  What they saw was a desolate wilderness, land that was not settled of grass, and was lacking in trees.   The land was scarce of water even though it had four rivers that ran across the barren plains.  It took the bold and brave emigrants to see the area for what it had to offer and people like A.S. Baker to harness the water for farming.  Irrigation became a way to incorporate the natural resource of rainwater by conserving and not over using it.

Today on the plains of Morgan County irrigation is still used to bring water to the crops by ditch irrigation.  Ditches are dug out and seeding is planted in rows flanked by canals.  Most ditch irrigation have been replaced by Center Pivot Irrigation.

Thanks to the pioneers, Morgan County continues to thrive in agriculture.

What is the vitality of Morgan County?  I believe it is the neighborly connections and sense of community that are a testament to the unique joys of living in the small towns that make up our county.  Our community leaders continually join together to bring life to our small towns, they focus on growth that will highlight the assets we currently have, like history and agriculture.  They also do it by encouraging the community to flourish by undertaking in a creative project.

When you look out over the horizon in any direction In Morgan County you will see many family farms.  These farms are the backbone of our community, nation and society as a whole.   Farming is not easy work and its value is created through the struggle.  It is many times a never ending cycle of finishing the day exhausted, broken body and boots caked in dirt and mud.  Farmers persevere and maintain a sense of purpose, not only despite every obstacle, but also because of it.  They are rich, if it be only in their heritage.

They may not have the flashiest and the newest, but they are gentle to their machines and what they have is kept in reasonable shape.  They take pride and care for their soil to always make it better than when they started.
